Well, if it were me, I would always keep Word in Recall in reserve just in case I would need to bug out. I mean, his village was slaughtered by crazy extremist elves, the other side of the conflict are Lawful Evil genocidal tyrants, there are insane necromancers turning people into zombies around the countryside, and his neighbours have been turned into undead creatures that will become evil over time... Yes, he needs an escape route. Of course, he could keep Plane Shift prepared for that too... He would if he was powerful enough to cast Word of Recall, but he wasn't level 11 yet. Planeshift works quite well to get out of dodge, though he doesn't have much control over where on the desired plane he ends up.

Is it safe to presume that anytime you have a character play any role where their abilities would matter, you've created at least a basic character sheet for that character? In other words, you have a specific level and diety and ability scores, and at least a general outline of what spells that character can and can't cast?
