I'm finally beginning book 4, and with a new book comes a couple of new design decisions. Anyway, Pauline has returned and the battle has gone considerably (and predictably) down the toilet for the Sarbek cultists. And the two most easily spotted design changes are a new font and a larger overall size!

The link to this page from the archives goes to 649 instead. I can still go to the actual comic by clicking on "latest" while reading any strip, but not directly from the archive.

Out of curiosity, any reason for using a different font?

Out of curiosity, any reason for using a different font? I was just getting sick of using Comic Sans. I know a lot of people are sick of Comic Sans in general too.

The new font is kind of strange, it seems like a spooky font or something. It looks like it's supposed to be handwritten? It's kind of jarring because the large text is still all in the old font. I'm not really sure if I like it, the standard fonts are standard for a reason. I like the larger size, for sure. Why waste all that effort drawing things that people can't see because it's too small? I suppose eliminating a remaining shred of OOTS-ism.
Poor Sarbeks. We've barely gotten to see them, and they get wiped out straightaway. The evil characters came out for a fair fight with their good counterparts, and got murdered in a totally unfair fight, even by the standards of an unfair fight. I wonder if Harvey is going to be hauled in on charges when he gets back to civilization. This seems like a pretty heinous offense. The priestess was pretty hot too, in an evil librarian kind of way.
"six to twelves" in the 2nd to last panel

"six to twelves" in the 2nd to last panelThe large text is actually in "Hey Gorgeous", which was a change that set in sometime during the third book. I had been using it for some of the sound effects, but I found exclamations stood out more with it so I started using it with text too. As far as the battle goes, I don't think there were any real rules set in place...Jack's remark when Angelika was making the opening attack was tongue in cheek. Edit: I fixed the typo too. Thanks for pointing it out.

I actually didn't know it was Comic Sans; I think that's because the little extra/wavy bits don't have enough detail to show up at that size, whereas the new font does despite being the same size.

The new font is a bit shaky-looking, it gives the impression of wavering/weak/suffering voices, doesn't really fit for straightforward battle banter.
The thing about Comic Sans is that this being a comic it was appropriate in this context. But if you're totally sick of it I'm sure there are better alternatives than the one used for this strip.

I'm actually gonna change it back. As much as some people don't like Comic Sans, I do agree that it just fits better. It's easier to read, too.

Hi! New reader here, started around the time Jordie got kidnapped. Since it's a new book, I finally decided to stop lurking and say how much I love this comic. It's great, brightens up my day when there's an update ^_^
Happy to see Pauline alive again. Loving Pauline's boys too, especially Patrick. Wonder why Maclain hasn't healed himself yet, although I guess the battle's pretty much over.

Well, I am a confirmed member of the Comic Sans hater club. I have the membership badge and hat. And even I say, the right place for Comic Sans is in a comic strip.
